Master Leão Teixeira, affectionately known as "Zé Beleza" or just simply "Zé", is a prominent figure in the rich tapestry of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu history.
1970s
Early Roots with Rolls Gracie
His journey into the Brazilian style of Jiu-Jitsu began in the vibrant city of Rio de Janeiro, at the famous Gracie Academy in Copacabana, with Grand Master Rolls Gracie.
Rolls was the Champion of the Gracie family. His agile and dynamic style revolutionised the art of Jiu Jitsu. He was undoubtedly a leader, not only for Jiu Jitsu, but for a whole generation.
When Leāo entered the academy, Rolls introduced him to Carlos Gracie Jr. (Carlinhos) and the two quickly became close friends. In later years, they would go on to establish major projects, like the foundation of the Brazilian Confederation (CBJJ) and the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF), two organisations that would accelerate the growth of Jiu-Jitsu as a sport.
Although, it was Rolls Gracie who would soon become an influential figure in shaping Zé Beleza's approach to the art.
Following his teachers guidance, Zé not only learned the core principles that define Jiu Jitsu - grace, leverage, and the seamless fusion of art and combat strategy - he would also begin to imbibe his teacher's philosophy, learning the true essence of the art - discipline, determination, and the relentless pursuit of mastery.
These values would later become the foundation of his own teachings.
1980s
In 1982 Rolls tragically passed away at the early age of 31, following a Hand-Gliding accident.
Carlinhos took over the Copacabana academy, a decision made during a meeting held with all the students, and Rolls’ wife, Angela Gracie. Then, in 1984, Carlinhos, together with his brothers, Crolin and Rillion, and his cousins, the Machado brothers, set out on a new project; taking Jiu-Jitsu to Barra da Tijuca, a new neighbourhood in Rio de Janeiro.
It was here, as a founding member of the first Gracie Barra Academy that Leāo Teixeira, together with Crolin Gracie, began to teach the children’s morning classes. With the knowledge acquired from his academic training in Physical Education, partnered with his aptitude for Jiu Jitsu, Zé began to formulate new and inventive methods for teaching and training young children.
Black Belt from Carlos Gracie Jr. (1986)
In 1986, Leāo Teixeira would achieve the prestigious milestone of receiving his Black Belt, from Carlos Gracie Jr.
This recognition underscored not only his technical proficiency but also his embodiment of the values inherent in the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu lineage. Zé Beleza's journey was now marked with a new level of responsibility, as he embraced his role as a leader in the growing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu community.
With his innovative teaching methods, coupled with the growth of the Gracie Barra Team, Zé soon had more than 100 children under his tutelage. Great names of the sport of Jiu Jitsu would emerge from these mats in Barra.
Athletes and fighters such as, Hélio 'Soneca' Moreira; Ralph Gracie; Marcio Feitosa; Rafael Correia “Gordinho”; Flávio Almeida “Cachorrinho”; Rolles Gracie Jr.; Igor Gracie, and Marco Joca "Piu-Piu" to name a few.
1990s
In 1992, Zé's reputation as a skilled and dedicated instructor led to a remarkable and significant invitation. He was asked to showcase his teaching prowess and establish his own school by the renowned Dalal Achcar Art & Cultural Centre in Gávea, Rio de Janeiro.
It was here that a new chapter of Jiu Jitsu would begin, with the founding and creation of "Escola de Jiu Jitsu - Leāo Texiera."
